Has anyone removed the glare shield in a GE8 headlight?

I'm looking to buy a set of mini "projector" LEDs. It's a step shy of an actual retrofit and the current obstacle for me is the glare shield.
Apparently, headlights from 2011 onwards have a hollow shield which causes no issue for the particular bulb, but on sport models from 09 to 2010 it isn't hollow which gets in the way of the projector.
I'd buy those bulbs first before taking out my headlights and separating them, but I'd like to know if someone has managed to remove them.
