Initial Impressions of Homeworld 3
Post Body
Just going to lay out my thoughts and observations from the first 2.7 hours of the game.
- Ships feel fragile. Seriously I think I've replaced all my interceptors several times by now. I know strikecraft are easy to kill when they get hit but damn do they go down easy. Even frigates aren't safe. I sent in my frigate line up to clear out some anti-strikecraft turrets and imagine my surprise to see my frigates taking appreciable damage. That just feels wrong considering anti-strikecraft fire should be weak against the bigger stuff. Makes it hard to feel invested in my fleet too which is one of the biggest parts of the series.
- This feels like a controversial take but I never knew how much Homeworld was lacking in the battles until I played this game and Deserts of Kharak. The voice acting in 1 and 2 feels so stoic and professional to me that it verges on making crew/pilots feel like robots. It's really kind of amazing how much it livens up a fight to actually hear people raise their voices in the battle chatter and get stuck into it.
- I like Imogen so far. IDK why. Maybe it's because when she said "I can feel their losses" I really felt that as a Homeworld player. Maybe it's because the voice acting in BlackBird Homeworld just feels more like people and less like robots.
- Space terrain is a cool idea but I don't think I'll using it much. Feels like strikecraft are the best units to send through tunnels but as previously mentioned they feel very flimsy.
- I've seen a few people say the pathfinding is bad and I very much agree. I told my railgun corvettes (described as a backline unit) to engage some enemy frigates, took my attention elsewhere and was shocked to find them sitting in the middle of the battle when I refocused on them. And in the previously mentioned attempt to clear out turrets with my frigates they took some really weird paths trying to line up shots and got super close to the turrets. My interceptors got stuck when I told them to move once too. Might have been because I had so many trying to move at once?
