I am looking to upgrade to a modern 55ā (or so) TV that is as unobtrusive with its smart features as possible. I want to be able to quickly switch between my HDMI inputs without the TV trying to guess what I have plugged in. I want my input setup to be as follows:
- HDMI 1 - Apple TV streaming box
- HDMI 2 - HDMI hub for modern video game consoles (16:9)
- HDMI 3 - HDMI hub for classic video game consoles (4:3)
Basically I want my only entertainment to come from what I have plugged into the HDMI ports, and not from any native apps on the TV itself. I have a similar setup on my current Samsung Smart TV and I hate how insistent the interface is on trying to ādetect deviceā or give me what it thinks are the best settings whenever I switch to a different game console. Even when disconnecting the TV from the Internet and disabling a bunch of smart features, there are still some settings it keeps changing, such as turning off Game Mode or forcing 16:9. Itās clear that the TV does not want me to utilize a setup like this.
So Iām curious, is there a TV brand out there that is well suited for this kind of setup? Some key features Iām looking for include:
- No automatic input device detection (or at least the option to disable)
- Option to force Game Mode to always be on for a specific HDMI port
- Option to force aspect ratio settings for a specific HDMI port
- Quick switching between HDMI inputs (no menu lag, ideally just one button press on the remote)
These feel like pretty basic features and yet I canāt seem to find much in the way of televisions that do this upon researching online. Iāve seen murmurs of some current TVs on the market offering a ābasicā or ādumb TVā mode, but havenāt come across any brands that actually advertise that as a feature.
Iām not picky with visual fidelity, LED vs QLED vs OLED, etc. My budgetās around $500 so I know it wonāt be top-of-the-line; as long as the picture looks generally decent, and I can play my games without significant input latency, Iām happy. 4K HDR would be nice as one of my consoles is a PS5 but itās not a must. Any recommendations?
Also, as an aside, the retro consoles Iāll primarily be using are a Nintendo GameCube and Sega Dreamcast both being run through HDMI upscalers. I know CRTs are what most retro gaming purists will recommend, but I really just want one modern TV in my living room that also allows me to play these games from time to time.
