I know this comparison has probably been beaten to death but I have to ask cause I just can’t make a decision and don’t want to get hit with a 15% restocking fee from Best Buy.
I have a dedicated theatre room that I will probably paint dark, will be projecting a 135 in screen.
So here are the options and the conclusions I’ve come to based off research.
Epson 3800 on sale for $1499
Best value if I just want to get a decent 4k projector and not break the bank. Leaning towards this is just get my theatre setup with the thought that I will upgrade to something much nicer down the line. Possibly focus uniformity issues though on this one but overall good 4k picture. Lens shift isn’t near my as good which is def a negative because I wanted to put the projector in the far back right of the room. Not a deal breaker though.
Epson 4010 on sale for $1699
Sounds like this is a decent option because it has a lot of the features as the 5050 like the insane lens shift but lacks the hdmi (which I don’t even think I care about?) and the great black levels. But again it’s cheapish. Potentially a shareper image than the 5050 from what I’ve read. But other than that a solid purchase.
Epson 5050ub on sale for $2499
The beloved projector under $3k by almost everyone. I just don’t know if almost $1k justifies what I’m getting over the other 2. Sounds like I would have to be a real home theatre snob to maybe care. Maybe not though. Sounds like hdr isn’t stellar or has some issues? Also picture could be sharper.
So that where I’m at. I’m leaning towards the 4010 cause I’m saving almost $1k but still get the same lens shift as the 5050.
I’m open to suggestions. What’s do you guys think?
