Where is the last state you would want to have a free 40 acre homestead that you had to live in?

People have actually ranked these things…like quantitatively.
The answer is pretty much the northeast plus Alaska. The growing season is universally short. In Maine and Alaska you are very remote from markets and lacking in infrastructure. The rest of the northeast is high cost, high tax, high regulation so low return on investment. Plus in those areas the ground and water may be poisoned by generations of industry for extra fun.
