I'm a hobbyist not doing serious recording; mostly just trying to play live, mostly by myself with a Boss RC-30 looper pedal (though sometimes with friends). (E.g., play guitar for a few bars of metronome, then play electronic drumset over that, then play more guitar or bass or mic or something over that).
The looper has two inputs and two outputs. Currently I'm using one of the inputs/outputs for guitar signal to guitar amp; and previously the other had drums/bass/mic as being swapped out as input and output going into a Monoprice PA speaker.
I just added a Behringer UMC404hd Audio interface to my setup, that I intended to act as mixer for bass / drums / mic as inputs (and can also use to record things if desired); that is take the three inputs, push the output into the looper and listen to it through the PA speaker.
However, when I setup the drums to input into the UMC, I find that if I setup a input gain level where the bass drum doesn't clip (sending from line output of the electronic drums), that the volume output of the UMC404hd is quiet to the point at 'normal' volume levels I can't even hear the drums over the drum stick on plastic sound of playing the kit, even with UMC's main output volume cranked all the way.
If I crank the PA volume up significantly, then I can get a decent volume level coming out of the drums; however at this point there's a very significant high frequency white noise hiss coming out of the speaker.
My question is do I need some sort of preamp to boost the signal coming out of the UMC? And what kind of preamp (preferably that can take 1/4" input/output to go into looper)? Or is my setup crazy and I really need something else? Thanks. Budget is preferably in the $200 or less range (but could go over if really necessary).
