Handling air quality when living near a highway
Post Body

I live on the 5th floor of an apartment building facing toward a 4-lane highway about a block away. There's a line of trees along the highway and a hospital across the way. I keep my windows shut, and rarely go out onto the tiny balcony area of my apartment. No babies, kids, pets or older folks here; just a decently healthy guy in his thirties.

After noticing how quickly dust accumulates in my place, I figured it was wise to look into air filtration. I'm pretty concerned/overwhelmed with what I found, and I'm hoping to get some clarification on the risks and some simple steps on how best to stay safe.

How dangerous is this setup? Do I need to seriously consider moving? I'm aware that living this close to a highway has been shown to increase risk of health problems, but I want to ensure I'm not uprooting my life over something like 'an 0.05% chance becomes a 0.10% chance; YOU DOUBLE YOUR RISK OF DEATH!' I really like this location and it will be awhile before I can reasonably move regardless.

In terms of air quality control, what are the best sensors for detecting crap from a highway, and what the best filters I can use to help pushback against this problem? I'm aware HEPA filters are very widely recommended, but that they may not be able to deal with elements like CO/gases/etc from the highway. Products from companies like IQAir and PurpleAir are very expensive, so I want to make sure I'm actually spending wisely.

Has anyone in a similar location found a good solution for this, or is it time to look for vacancies?
