Surprise home inspection! (what do we do?)
Post Body

My husband and I bought a new (to us) home in August. The home was built in 1930. Naturally, we got homeowners insurance.

Towards the end of last month, I got an email from my agent, saying that they filed the paperwork incorrectly in our policy, so it was rejected. Coverage would end Nov 20.

BUT, if I would send back the check that was automatically sent out to us, they would resubmit the paperwork and totally take care of it for us, and it would be fine.

I send the check back. And thought all would be fine.

TODAY, I just got an email from him, saying that we'd be contacted in the next few days for a house inspector to come, which needs to happen for them to reinstate the policy. I am fucking furious. In the time since we gained ownership of the home, we've demo'd the basement, we're having both bathrooms redone (one hasn't started yet, but the other is completely ripped apart) AND our roof started leaking, so we're getting a new roof someone in the next two weeks (already got inspections, bids, picked a company, signed, and paid the deposit. They just need to get back to us with the day).

So this is not an ideal fucking time for a home inspection that we shouldn't need, because we should have insurance had the guy not fucked up!?!?!

I first emailed the agent, asking exactly how having a home inspector in is "taking care of it for us, with no further problems" and explained that we're in the middle of renovations. I also tried to call the inspection company, and had to leave a message as they're closed now (agent didn't email me until after 6pm with this information).

Any advice on what to do? Are we screwed, as we have obvious water damage in one ceiling right now, and a demo'd basement and a ripped up bathroom? Should I ask to talk to the agent's boss? Should I scramble to find new insurance in 18 days?

For the record, this is an agent for a major insurance company with a compelling jingle.

I am so goddamn pissed off right now, and I don't know what to do.

Thoughts?
