Volunteer at the homeless shelter

I used to volunteer at the homeless shelter before the pandemic. I kinda miss it but same time scared of individuals there was there.
My question to you,
As a volunteer staff, how can I help you if you were staying at the homeless shelter? As a volunteer, I feel there is more leeway than being an employer. Like I willing to break the rules for individuals but same time I don’t want to be taken advantage of
If you can give me a list of ways to help you if I was a volunteer staff. What can I do?
