Any suggestions for a DIY NAS with the footprint of a retail NAS unit?

Post Body
I have a Synology 4-Bay NAS that I'm really not happy with, in terms of performance and the lack of available FOSS software. I'm looking to either build my own or purchase something that's the physical size of a NAS, but one that allows me to install Ubuntu on. It would purely be for backups, I have a main server for all my homelab needs. Does anyone have any suggestions?
