So here's the deal, in my homelab, I'm making Management ports purple cables, and the standard data cables Black and KVM cables Green and rack external patches white. So far so straight forward, right? I've got mostly Dell servers that have the following port loadout:
2x 10GB SFP for VMs on the LAN, Backup and MIgration data, etc (These are clearly data ports), Black
1x KVM AVRIQ (These are clearly KVM), Green
1x iDRAC port for onboard baseband management (These are clearly management), Purple
1x 1GB CAT6 Unused (No cable).
1x 1GB CAT6 for using the Proxmox UI, uploading ISOs, etc. Not used for VM communications. Is this considered management traffic or data traffic? This is where I log into the Spice/VNC for each machine to use GUIs for some tests, and where I am monitoring stats and other things. Should this cable be black or purple? Or is it some different categorization all together? If it *should* be purple, should I piggyback my iDRAC data through it using the shared port feature, or run 2x Purple per server?
I'm working on cleaning up my cabling and ordering correct-sized cables, and I'm just not sure what to do with that last cable. Please advise!
