I just bought my first proper server, a Dell R720 and it came with a PERC H310 mini RAID controller. I have been debating going with ESXi 7 or Windows Server Datacenter.

To run ESXi I know I will have to upgrade my RAID card to an H710p for $50 and I was planning on getting the VMUG subscription.

Through Azure tools for education, I get Windows Server Datacenter. I don't believe I'd have to change anything in my setup to run.

I know I'm going to be running a domain with AD and CS. I also plan on running Plex and a NAS on the box as well.

I've got a friend pushing me towards VMWare. What are y'all's opinions on what hypervisor I should look at?
