Speedtest results for over a year

Post Body

Hi all,

I've been running this script for over a year now, and thought some people might be interested in the results. I pay for a symmetric 1Gbps link from Verizon with fiber to the home. This is in the NE Ohio region. The script runs every night at 7:30pm from a scheduled task. There are some small gaps where the script didn't run for whatever reason, but largely this ran every day. The speedtest runs from my desktop computer, which is behind a Unifi switch, a USG-3P with the IDS turned off, and then the Motorola modem provided by Verizon, so each of those may play an impact in the expected results. Additionally, I chose 7:30pm because I presumed that would be, on average, the highest traffic in my neighborhood.

The script can be found on my github. It uses PowerShell to run the test and Twilio to send a text to my phone. Should be easy to modify for your own desires.

Chart data

  1. I don't think the trendlines here are very indicative of anything in particular, other than *maybe* that my network quality has slowly degraded over time since I signed up for service.
  2. I never fully investigated the drop in service from ~June-December. I also never called in to question why my speeds were so far below my advertised rates, for a couple of reasons.
    1. I was slightly curious to see how long it would persist before (if ever) the speeds returned to normal
    2. I may or may not have traffic that might or might not set off concerns behind a residential connection and not a business connection.
  3. The summary data is in a chart below. I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary, considering all of the other factors that would be influencing the throughput available to my desktop.

Data roll-up

Definitely open to any suggestions or comments about how to make this better.
