So I accidentally bought a r510 12bay with extended ears on ebay, the image showed standard ears and after getting it, I didnt want to ship it back (it turned out to be a good deal no matter what) so I went on a search to find the proper ears. The right ear, with video and usb was somewhat easy to find on ebay: here or here
However the left ear with the power button and diagnostics was pretty much impossible to find so on a whim I picked up a dell r720xd left ear here (since it is also a 12 bay model and has a similar left ear setup).
Well today I finally got my r720xd ear and decided to see what it does if I just plug it in directly to the backplane like the old extended ear was. No go, oh well was worth a shot. After this I decided to take apart the r510 extended ear and remove all the electronics and migrate them to the r720xd ear, after a bit of fiddling, I was able to put the r510 ear guts into the r720xd ear and power everything back up, hit the power button and everything worked great!
so TL;DR a r720xd rack ear fits on a r510 12bay with no issues and you can switch the guts of the ear out so it works just fine!
Hope this helps out those of us who got a EE model but much prefer the standard ear models and are having problems finding those elusive parts!
