How do you know if your smart home device is “phoning home” or hacked?

Post Body

I’m needing to upgrade my Wifi router very soon and I want to make sure my next one will help me make sure something isn’t either sending out data to the world, but also make sure something isn’t jamming up my network.

One of my concerns is also something being hacked and then allowing access to other devices on my network.

I could disable all of my smart home devices from reaching the internet, but I want to make sure I can still control them with my google home (which is definitely spying on me, but I guess I’m ok with that one).

Super new to home networking and things like that, but as long as someone points me in the right direction (in plain words) I’m sure I can fill in the gaps.

Thank you so much for this awesome community 🙏
