Philips Wiz v. Nanoleaf Essentials

Post Body

Right now my local hardware store has a 4-pack of Philips Wiz 60w bulbs for $37/ or a little less then $10 per bulb. They have the Nanoleaf Essential marked down to $15 per bulb.

Neither require a hub. I know Nanoleaf is thread-enabled and Wiz has stated they support Matter. But, Nanoleaf only has E26-A19 bulbs and an indoor light strip while Wiz has a tremendously more robust lineup of lighting options.

I use Google Assistant and HomeKit. I’ll probably be getting into Home Assistant over the Christmas holiday break. My current router is an Orbi but I’m probably going to pick up either Eero Pro 6 or a Orbi with Wi-Fi 6 or 6e. I run all of my smarthome/IoT devices on a separated VLAN network.

In short, is the $5 difference between the Philips Wiz and the Nanoleaf Essential Bulb worth going with the Nanoleaf?

That’s what I’m leaning towards for sure. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Thread but I don’t quite understand all of it. But, it sounds like it’s more of a software thing versus a hardware thing so it sounds like it could be added to Wiz down the road?

Awesome! I’m really excited to start getting into Home Assistant!

That is interesting! I like playing with colors so I’m buying only RGB bulbs. Hopefully that avoids the issue!

Are you aware of any indicator or packaging note or list of what products they are? I assume the newer packaging will have the Matter logo on it somewhere.

Any particular reason why? I’m leaning towards Wiz for sure but my reason is because they have more lighting/bulb options.
