Hey guys,
Thought I'd share a story of my recent struggle, hopefully it will amuse or help you.
The other day I switched out my front porch light with a smart bulb, hard wired the switch that controls it so that it would be always on, and set up an automation for it to turn on and off at sunset and sunrise. I did this all during the day so that I had nice natural lighting to use while I turned off the breaker to the switch.
I go to test it, and no luck. I put the old bulb in to check, no luck. I figured I must have messed something up in the wiring, so I pull it all out, check it, test voltage, put it all back in, no luck. So, I pulled the fixture off the wall to check connections, everything looked good, I could not figure it out.
So, I shelve it, thinking maybe I need to get an electrician in to fix whatever I had done.
I leave for the day, and come back home at night, and the light is on. It turns out my front porch fixture has its own light sensor on it so that it only powers on in the absence of light. So, I put some tape over the light so that my bulb doesn't show up as offline all day (I'm OCD about my SmartThings device list), and chuckled a bit.
I guess it's always good to step back and reassess when you're struggling with a problem. I was exclusively focused on wiring, had assumed I messed something up, and didnt even notice the little nub on the light fixture that turned out to be a light sensor. Lesson learned.
