I'm remodeling various parts of my house at the moment and have taken this as an opportunity to set up a bunch of home automation and so on and so forth. I've been enjoying the hell out of it so far but it's gotten a bit addicting.
Case in point, as I was moving my bed out of the master bedroom so I can redo the floors, I got an itch to work with the headboard some. This particular headboard of mine has a bunch of storage in it BUT it also has this little feature: originally, you could plug the headboard into an outlet then plug a lamp into a different outlet that was just inside that hole. At that point, you could turn on and dim the lamp using the handy handy knob there.
The dimmer broke years ago and the wiring could start a fire. Not only that but one lamp was ok when I was single but with a wife, we need two. What I wanted to do was rip out all the wiring and put in a surge protector with a couple of smart outlets plugged into which I could plug the lamps on the end tables.
Sorry about the long winded set up, here is my ultimate question:
What would be the best way to control those. I have a Smartthings hub and Amazon Echo in the next room over. I don't want to have to yell to turn on the lights (and the Echo Dots are on backorder until the end of June). I also don't want to have to reach for my phone just to turn on the lights. Is there some kind of connected simple switch I could mount to the headboard in place of the old knob that would work with my system? What would you recommend? Would you recommend something else entirely for controlling the lamps?
Just an FYI: There is about a 1'x1'x1.5' space in the back to work with where the current cord and stuff is.
Thanks!
