Set Up Remote Access Without Port Forwarding

I am just getting the hang of it. I am familiar with linux and stuff but a newbie with networking. The thought of forwarding ports, nginx, vpn etc makes me uneasy, I dont properly understand the security implications of opening up the router like that. Are there ways to set it up without port forwarding ? I read somewhere that setting a google micro instance with nginx can set it up without port forwarding
