help with butterfly

So how do you tell if you have a wide or narrow butterfly? I've always had issues with my pads covering my five hole. At first I though it was just how I was going down. But now I feel like my pads aren't right for my style. I use bauer 35 with no break or outer roll break. I'm not very flexible still so I can't get a full split.
