Here's one of the incidents from the Flyers Devils game a couple of nights ago; as you can see, Rinaldo goes up to Zach Parise, clearly after the whistle and when all play had ceased, and kicks out his legs in a textbook slewfoot. You can see the intent there: he was pissed his team was getting steamrolled (6-2 Devils with 8 minutes left in the game at that point, but it was 6-0 at one point), and you can't even make the argument that he was trying to make a play or defends himself, as the act occurred several seconds after the whistle and Parise was simply gliding away. Rinaldo received a $2500 fine for the play in addition to a $2500 fine for a late hit earlier in the game (couldn't find a video)
Anyway, putting my personal bias towards the Flyers aside, why is this play not suspendable? I've seen a couple of slewfoots this year and some from the past years, and I don't think a single one of them has been suspended. Especially in a situation where it's impossible to make the argument that the player was trying to make a player or defend himself (like Rinaldo), why does an act where a player intentionally kicks out the legs of another player and puts him in a dangerous situation not warrant a suspension?
I really had high hopes for Shanahan this year, and he had a good start, but he's let me down. It seems like he only cares if players get hit in the head or end up with a concussion. Anyway, do you guys think a slewfoot, regardless of player history and result (injury), should be a automatically suspendable action?
EDIT: As if that play wasn't scummy enough, Rinaldo, after slewfooting Parise, just FAKED getting slewfoot two minutes into today's game. Unreal
