Having watched the leadup to the NBA draft, with my Wizards holding #2OA, I constantly saw stuff about how this was the weakest class in years. No definitive superstar, and even the top guys like Risacher and Sarr are thought to have low ceilings compared to previous top-end picks like Wemby, Zion, Morant, or Luka.
In light of this, what's the last time the NHL draft was like that? It's one thing to look back on a draft like 2012's top-4 or 1996 as a whole and wonder what the hell happened, but guys like Yakupov were expected before the draft to be elite. What was the last time that the consensus going in was that the class sucked?
2017 has been mentioned but 2012 there were some concerns as well leading in. Injury bug plagued some of the top prospects. I believe both Murray and Galchenyuk missed time. Morgan Rielly dropped as well out of the top tier cause of missing nearly the whole year due to an injury as well.
