I don't know why Marc Bergevin keeps getting dragged into this. He was not an AGM at the time and was not involved in the meeting with all the high level executives where the issues was brought up. As far as we know, Marc Bergevin did not know this happened and was never in any meetings about this.
Cheveldayoff was in the meeting but was by far the lowest ranking person in the front office there. John McDonough, the former President of the Blackhawks at the time, said to the group he would handle the situation and the meeting ended. To Cheveldayoff as the must junior person in the meeting, he saw the matter was closed and that someone high up the chain would handle it. Nobody even recalled he was at that meeting after the fact except for himself. From Bettman's POV, it didn't make sense to hold Cheveldayoff responsible because he couldn't have done anything in his capacity nor was it his responsibility given McDonough had said he would oversee it.
