Any information on Vietnamese soldiers fighting on the Western front during WWI?

I'm currently reading Lanning & Cragg's "Inside the VC and NVA", and on page 20, there's an interesting note saying that "during World War I France was so much in control of the lives of the Vietnamese people that 100,000 of them were sent to the Western front to fight under the tricolor."
Does anyone have anymore information about this or any books covering this subject? Articles would be very welcomed!
