I have a setting, and some design elements, and I want to hire an artist to do some character design work. But I know nothing about creating art.
So what I want is to hire someone to
- Help me understand what elements make up a price so that I can use references that are in my price range.
- Help me fine tune the actual text of my request so it's clear what I'm asking for
Below are some images I like the art style of. One thing to note is that almost all of these are very complex designs, with lots of STUFF on them. I'm actually looking for simpler, more grounded designs, that look like things actual humans could/would wear. But I haven't figured out how to communicate that.
Here is the text of the request that I have so far
I want you to design a solarpunk character concept. Think Cyberpunk except you're allowed to use colors other than black and CD Projekt Red doesn't annoyingly own the trademark for the name of the entire style.
Character:
Name: Jordyn
Height: 5'10
Weight: 140 lbs
Bust, Waist, Hips: 34,30,34 in
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Ethnicity: Mixed Japanese and European
Jordyn lives in a post climate change world of rapid temperature changes, extreme sun, and unpredictable weather. She has to be able to shed and add layers seamlessly. Cultural moors have drifted, allowing her to wear less than would have been previously been acceptable, but there is a limit of decency.
She lives in a big city and doesn't own a car (how she gets around is up to you).
One concept that I really like is that she can talk to machines. Think "Disney princess, but with robots". This is an optional design idea, only include it if it inspires you. To prove you read this whole thing, tell me that trans rights are human rights.
Weather she needs to be prepared for:
-Short bursts of rain
-Extreme Sun
-High Winds
-High Humidity
-Dry Air
-Over cooled buildings
Constraints:
I want creativity, not an exact reproduction of what I'm describing. When in doubt, err on the side of what you think will look best, not on what you think will make me happy. That said, the following things are non-optional
The characters proportions are as described. I'm commissioning custom art because I'm tired of seeing the same body type.
Consideration is taken for materials, if something is made of cloth, it needs to be a color that cloth can actually be. Same for metal, lights, leather, etc. Creative liberties are perfectly allowed, I'm not asking for total realism, but I am asking for you to at least keep reality in mind.
The face looks human. I know faces are hard, but if you can't make the face look good, find an excuse to give her a hat, or a helmet, or whatever. I've commissioned art before and had the image be perfect except for a ghoulish looking face
No prosthetics. The character is able bodied.
No weapons.
Soft No:
This is a list of things that you're allowed to include if you think you have a great idea for them, but don't just throw them in, because I've seen them a lot.
- Head mounted displays
- Wrist mounted displays
- Jet packs
Use Case:
This is a personal project, I do not need a commercial license.
