This happened some time ago but it has piqued my curiosity ever since.
I had an ER visit where I was given a paper prescription upon discharge to go have filled. When I got home with the paper and took a closer look, the first thing I noticed was that it listed that I had an allergy to penicillin, which I do not. I looked more closely and saw an entirely different person’s name, address, phone number, and allergies. Obviously, I couldn’t fill this prescription since it didn’t even have my name on it. I called the ER and they instructed me to return immediately and bring the paper with me. They printed off a new prescription and took away the erroneous one. Actually, I recall explaining to a gentleman in triage why I had returned and when I showed him the paper he said “oh shit”. I took pictures of it while I was at home for documentation purposes in the event that I needed to report it. I ended up reporting it to some government agency that has something to do with HIPAA violations and received an email back saying no action was taken or necessary. So was this, or was it not a HIPAA violation and why? Thank you.
