Hiking gear for beginners?

Hi! I want to start hiking and have no idea of what kind of equipment to get. These would mostly be day trips, though I'd love to eventually do overnight trips too. I (31/f) just moved to WV, so there are plenty of places for me to explore. What are some must-have items for a day trip? Items or brands to avoid? Hiking etiquette I should know about?
