How Sub-Classes Could Save Matchmaking
Post Body

The topic of matchmaking is still very prevalent so I thought I'd share some thoughts, I realize none of this is new but I haven't seen it discussed recently. This isn't an MMR discussion per se more about the state of QM. Overall I've been experiencing fairly solid games but I generally don't play QM, so this is for those of you who do.

I think the biggest issue with matchmaking is the lack of character sub classes. Not all warriors are tanks, some are bruisers, engagers. Sonya and Mauridan do not fill the same role. But the system says each side has a warrior, therefore everything is good. The supports are in a better place, you can solo heal now with every character meaning getting a solo heal Tass or Tyrande is not a death sentence against a Malf or Uther. But breaking down the assassins (Ranged, melee) and within that Auto-Attack and Mage, and the specialists (Pusher, Flex). Would very much improve the matchmaker. Obviously this system would push more towards mirror matchups at least in terms of role but I think identifying a core needs to be done.

Every game needs a Healer, Tank and Assassin. The last two spots are very much open, it could be an engager, bruiser, pusher. In an ideal world Blizzard would collect stats of what heroes play well together and try and build that into the system but I don't think that would realistically happen. I honestly believe the player base is big enough that these sort of systems wouldn't result in a horribly long queue time.

I also don't know what percentage of people queue as supports and tanks it would be interesting to see those numbers, however perhaps increasing the instances of those daily quests could help foster more play in the less used roles.

Having this further delineation would likely yes, increase queue times but at the end of the day I would rather have a better game and wait 8 minutes for a queue.

TL;DR Create more precise hero sub-classes and build matchmaking around a Support, Tank, Assassin core.
