i can't start chats with people anymore

On mobile, I used to be able to click on a profile picture, and it would have a button with text something like "Start chat". This was working a few days ago, but the button has... disappeared? It's just gone. I can't think about anything I've done that could have caused this as a Reddit punishment or smth. I'm really confused, any help is greatly appreciated.
