Can't seem to delete messages

I'm clearing out my old reddit messages, some of them have the delete option, but others only show permalink. I'm on firefox, not mobile. Can anyone help me out?
Edit: To be clear I dont mean hidint chat messages. I mean deleting direct messages. From what I can see you can't delete a message you sent but that seems ridiculous. Lots of people hate a messy inbox so there's no way they made it that way is there?
