Replacing America's Healthcare System: There has to be a better way. Opinions?
Post Body

First, let me say that I am not in the healthcare industry and I really would like opinions from people who are. I am really frustrated with the current system, but believe if the US government was allowed to build a socialize single payer healthcare system, we would end up with the Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare for everyone and that is even more frightening than what we have now. As an engineer and data analysis, I have looked over tons of healthcare related data and statistics to come up with what I think is a better idea. Let's face it, anything might be better than what we have now. I would like to know if this idea is really workable.

  1. Basic care is cash-based and through a medical provide where they, the medical provider or company employing medical providers, develop concierge type care up to a maximum yearly amount of $10,000 in care. This allows for the majority of people in the US to receive general care up to something like a broken arm. Based on medical costs usages tables and removing all the sick and chronic people from the coverage works out to about $25/month per person.

  2. Comprehensive Care is Insurance based and runs from $10,000 to $125,000 per person per year. Because the chronic and critical costs are removed, it greatly reduces the insurance risks so the cost plummets. Insurance would be across state lines with tailorable plans. Should run anywhere from $75-$250/mth

  3. Medicare for all. The money taking out of your paycheck now covers any care above $125,000 per year up to a maximum of $500,000. Medicare plans can also be purchased for the comprehensive portion but it has to compete along with the commercial plans. Medicare would still maintain the disability and long term care portions.

  4. Sharing. Religious organizations have health sharing plans. Open this up to any organization that wants to create a plan. This would include the US government establishing a sharing plan. Only caveat, the organization running a sharing plan has to be non-profit. Sharing would look to cover anything not covered by other plans (like anything over $500,000 in a year). Sharing plans providing Comprehensive care would also be allowed to provide direct competition to the commercial insurance companies.

  5. Prescription Drugs. Anyone with a prescription can buy drugs from anywhere in the world they see fit. This would impact the lock drug companies have on the US. Also, commercial, medicare and other non-profits would be allowed to create their own drug programs, like a basic plan that only covers the top 50 generic drugs on the market. Allows for creative drug plan development that would include foreign drug purchases to lower costs.
