IEMs vs Headphones for Detail Retrieval?

Post Body

SO I get that the presentation is totally subjective. Some prefer greater soundstage, and some prefer the in your head type of sound. Different strokes for different folks, and that's okay.

What I'm trying to figure out, however, is whether or not IEMs provide more detail than headphones? I don't really understand how acoustics work, so I thought I would come to Reddit and ask those who are a little more knowledgable than myself.

From what I can understand, IEMs will generally provide more detail since they're physically closer to your eardrum, and sound doesn't have to travel through your outer ear compared to headphones. Not sure if this is true, just something I've heard in passing.

So, presentation preference aside, which experience can get someone the most detail possible? Would love to hear some thoughts about this, thanks!

Actually thinking of switching from Ananda to some Audeze IEMs so I'm doing as much research as I can. Love Ananda, hate comfort/weight.
