What were the master copies of recorded albums, throughout history recorded on?

Also when and is digital copies the final solution for a master copy these days? Also when did digital overtake vinyl in audio clarity? Avoiding sound signatures which I know is different; also kind of hard to do...

Anyways I know this seems like a dumb question, though it seemed like the right place to ask on Reddit and googling around didn’t reveal too much.

One final question: what is the gold standard of recording as far as audio formats these days for a master?

Edit: whoops. Also of note was tape ever considered a master worthy format?
