Desktop PC headphones (+ possibly amp) upgrade?
Post Body

  • Budget - Approx. $150 - 300 USD, soft limit (200 for headphones, 100 for amp); See below for details

  • Source - Desktop PC

  • Requirements for Isolation - Minimal; Will be mostly using these at home, no real need to be blocking out much noise, but a little bit wouldn't hurt

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-size over ear

  • Preferred tonal balance - Not too sure, probably either strong midrange or overall balance. My uses include gaming, watching anime/TV shows, music

  • Past headphones - Astro A40s. Simulated surround sound with the Astro Mixamp. They were large enough to fit around my ears, fabric ear cup cushions very comfortable even in warmer weather. No real dislikes I could find.

  • Preferred Music

    • Japanese EDM(?) Doujin Music Not sure how to classify. Some kind of trance/house electronic music?
    • General JPop/Anime/Idol music
    • Instrumentals: Piano Violin/Strings mostly
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Headband broke from drop, temporarily fixed with glue. Looking for a slight upgrade in general sound quality, but still keeping virtual surround sound.

I'm looking at two possibilities:

  • I only get new headphones and keep using my Astro Mixamp. It seems to be a 70 mW 32 Ohm output. I was considering the BeyerDynamic DT990 32 Ohm version, but welcome any suggestions.
  • For those familiar with the Astro Mixamp, would you recommend an upgrade? I'm not too familiar with amps but I really like the virtual surround sound. When it's off, it feels like the headphones are playing sound straight into my ears, but with it on it feels like I'm actually "in" the scene or the source. I'm not sure whether they just sound bad without it and other headphones/amps sound better by default or if virtual surround sound actually makes a big difference.

EDIT: If it makes a difference, I'm currently using the optical out from the motherboard into the amp.
