The amount of choices there are for headphones is a bit overwhelming. Can I please have some help?

I was directed here from buy it for life, and this seems to be the place for headphones advice.
I am looking for a high end pair of headphones, 250-500 USD.
I would like a pair of headphones with a lot of cushioning, and I do mean HEADPHONES, not Ied's.
I want over the ear headphones, noise cancelling is preferred.
Any suggestions? Thanks for reading, and thanks for the help from a novice audiophile!
