I really appreciated this doc. For whatever reason, I remember Frederick Douglass in my US History class. I mostly remember the big gray hair and the commentary about how he was the first black man prominent is US History. The text took up almost exactly 1/2 of a page in my textbook. And, after seeing this doc, I realize how short-changed I was.
This doc was informative about his rhetoric and persuasion on the abolitionist movement. It’s also a quick hitter, at less than an hour. Definitely not perfect, it still hit me hard.
I must admit, though, that the hardest hitting parts appealed to my appreciation for word and stage play. This is to say that if you are brought in my the stage, I feel this documentary will hit you stronger. And if you’re not, you might find it wanting.
For me, it was a good watch and relatively moving. 7/10.
