How did Charlie's friends fly onto the Hogwarts grounds?

I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed here but as I was previously rereading the series, I was stumped by how Charlie's friends were able to fly onto the Hogwarts grounds to pick up Norbert in the first book. I would assume the astronomy tower is covered by protection spells like every other part of the castle and grounds. They make such a big point of it in later books that no one is able to fly/apparate into Hogwarts with all the protection charms and spells on the castle. It seems like a bit of a plot hole, but I was wondering if I was just missing something.
