Why did Snape kill Dumbledore?

Okay, so I've only seen the movies, not read the books- please don't hurt me.

My question is: Snape kills Dumbledore and uses it as an in to go work for Voldemort, but he never actually does anything to help the good guys once he's there? Like, he just goes evil and that's it. That's all the movies show, anyway. Can someone please explain what we got out of Snape joining Voldemort but supposedly still being a good guy? Thanks! Again, forgive my ignorance. <3
