Why didn't Voldemort kill Dumbledore?

Okay, so, I've only watched movies, and this duel was awesome. You book readers will definitely hate this, but I have to ask.

I don't understand. In order of the Phoenix, when Dumledore duels Voldemort, Voldemort breaks a spell by redirecting his wand, and creates a flaming serpent. At this point, Dumbledore is fighting it off. During that, why didn't Voldemort try to kill him? He was completely idle for ~15 seconds until he 'absorbed' the magic and got caught in a waterglobe. Dumbledore was absolutely screwed at that point, why did Voldemort just stand there? Can you only keep one magic ability active at once?
