I have a lot of TV show DVDs I need to process and pop on the plex box. A lot.
I thought I’d enabled cheat codes when I discovered I could do 264 (yes, 264) in handbrake with my 3080 in like 35s instead of 15m for the SuperHigh Quality 720p via cpu (5900x). But I see tons of posts saying I shouldn’t do it?
Doing gpu 264 at lossless quality gives me a file that’s about 2.5x as big as the software 264 at quality 15, but still only half the size of the mkv. I’ve looked and looked and I can’t tell the difference between those gpu encoded files and the original source. I don’t really care about the file size, since my NAS is really really big.
Should I really not be doing it with the GPU? Am I causing problems that I don’t realize by just visually comparing the video files?
