How bad is the area around Steindamm? Near the HBF

I am currently visiting Hamburg from Scotland and I am staying in a hotel that’s on the Steindamm near the HBF.
During the week the area seemed fine, but at the weekend it seemed to get quite bad. People openly doing drugs on the street, rent boys, hookers you name it. I don’t feel unsafe when I am walking down Steindamm , but it does feel a bit rough. Has it always been a bad area?
