I found it amazing in Halo CE. I had invited one of my friends over to play co-op, and we played through a couple of levels, having no idea that the Flood existed. We got to 343 Guilty Spark and suddenly the atmosphere totally changed, and we were lurking through a swamp with shotguns, and things started coming out of the wall. It was a time when it was still unusual for a game to introduce a twist halfway through, and having an entirely new faction of enemies that weren't even on the box art was a huge surprise.
