You're in luck, we're trying to foster a community to do just that, starting with a spikeball ladder that we'll be running this summer.
What's Spikeball?
Spikeball is a game or sport, that's growing in popularity that can be most easily described as miniaturized, 2v2, lawn volleyball - here's a quick 30-sec intro video to help visualize.
Okay, well what's a ladder?
A ladder is basically a ranked list of teams. You can challenge other teams close to you in rank to a game - if you win, you take their spot in the ladder and they move down a spot - if you lose, well nothing really.
Why a ladder and not a league?
The goal is to keep things flexible for people with differing schedules and to develop a group to make it easier for people to find others to play with. By going with a ladder, people can arrange games themselves, with teams of similar skill, and find times and locations that work for them. It also allows people to join the ladder mid season, and for weird numbers of teams, etc. It just seems like the best fit at this time, especially for year one.
I'm interested, what's the cost?
For regular ladder play, there is no cost, though each team is expected to bring their own spikeball set. This can be either a Standard Kit or a Pro Kit. We are planning on having a kickoff tournament, and end of season tournament which may have a small fee if we need to pay for field space (will depend on numbers, or finding other space available).
Okay, I'm in, where can I find out more?
Right now we're organizing through a HRM Spikeball Facebook Group, hop on in, ask questions, find a partner, organize some practice games, etc.
When's it start?
The ladder will start with a kickoff tournament on the weekend of May 15-16, either the Saturday or Sunday, still nailing down the best time and location. If you're have a preference or ideas come let us know in the group!
Gross, why Facebook?
While not preferred by some, it's the easiest way to handle communications, promote the group, etc, without investing a ton of time and money, this is very grassroots. If you want to access some more league details directly, here is a google doc: HRM Spikeball Ladder
What about COVID?
I believe the latest regulations allow a maximum of 75 participants in a single event. If we hit that, I'll be pleasantly surprised and will cap the event. Otherwise we will encourage everyone to follow all municipal, provincial, and federal guidelines.
