Does Using HTB on Ubuntu installed on laptop instead of VM work?

I recently installed Ubuntu on a old laptop I was gonna use strictly for hack the box I installed Ubuntu on vm on my other laptop and it was working now when I go to ping the target machine ip address in the terminal I get 100% packet loss even though I’m connected to the vpn I don’t understand.
