Hey Folks,

I'm working on the responder box and am having issues with Responder(the tool) not picking up SMB traffic(or any traffic for that matter)

What's set up:

-I am running Kali Linux on a VMWare virtual machine. it's up to date

-My OpenVPN for htb is connected through my main OS

What I have done to remediate the problem:

-turned off the HTML flag

-Made sure the SMB flag is turned on

-turned off all network firewalls

-switched from the UDP VPN on htb to the TCP VPN

-tried listening from eth0, tun0, tap0, all

This is apart from spending hours poking and prodding and reading the official walkthrough and reading a bunch of unofficial walkthroughs and reading the HTB forums and reading the reddit posts and downloading a windows Responder tool to see if THAT would work better since it doesn't have to traverse two VPNs

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled responder so it's back to default settings but I'm still not getting any listening traffic from it.

I do get a UDP error saying port 5355 is busy but when I do a netstat the only UDP port in use is the one that is used to tunnel to the main OS sooooooo.

I'm about to image a new VM with a different OS just to see if it's something inherent in Kali's setup but I would really love to pin down the problem so I could fix it. My feeling is this is a routing issue but I'm too green to know how to traverse it.

[Update] It worked! I had been running it on its own and not with python. A combination of running it with python and finally connecting to the VPN from inside of the VM did the trick. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read and/or offer advice
