So, my base just got robbed for the first time. How does this happen? on a PVE server

Just wondering. I play on a low population PVE only server. We've had this base up for about a week and a half now and I logged on today (to repair said base), only to find that almost all our stuff has been looted. I've tried searching the subreddit and it really is not clear as to whether this is a thing that supposed to be happening or not. Can someone fill me in? If its allowed, how do I get involved?
