Help! Just starting out.

So I finally went and got a gym membership and for the first time am truly working out in a gym setting. I'm unsure about how to go about the gym though. Do I use the machines mostly or should I focus on free weights? What do I do in what order? I really am a noob at this. I'm trying to gain muscle strength in my upper body and get some decent abs. Any help would be appreciated.
