What is the key to breaking past 4k?

I feel like this just a hard ceiling for me. I get to 4k and I seem unable to get further. I'll get to 4.1, then I'll fall back to 4. Then get to 3.8 and work my way back up, but I'm always right there. What are the best ways to break past this wall and get to the next level in terms of skill?
