When I first watched Gurren Lagann, I completely passed over Simon's line during the final battle as hype. I also missed it on my second watch. When I rewatched it for the third time, the line finally stuck out to me. It contradicts everything said up until that point. It was always "drill through the heavens," not "create the heavens." Why would the show's creators put in that specific line at the end that messes everything up?
It finally came to me why Simon's drill creates the heavens: he is creating a new world for all of the spiral races. The Antispiral made the universe into their own world that stifled the spiral. When Simon drills through the heavens put there by the Antispiral, he is creating a new world and a new heaven above what was there before. Plus, Simon knows that one day, someone will go even farther than he did, drilling through the heavens he created.
That's my interpretation. What do you think?
