Restoration of an L1A1 rifle.

So this more of a personal curiosity research item. I have a friend who has inherited an L1A1 rifle. And I'm Wanting to pose a question for some of you that might have some insight on things to note for restoration on one of these rifles. Such as any common things to inspect for this particular firearm aside from basic maintenance, and what I really would like to know is what was the original protective finish that was used on this rifle? Parkerizing? Bluing? Ect.
